The European Commission has met all of Bratislava’s demands, but the decision remains in Slovakia’s hands.
Meanwhile, Russia is ramping up record-breaking bombings of Ukraine, even using banned chemical weapons, while the EU tries to force the Kremlin to end the war. Kallas made it clear that sanctions must be tough, and the EU will keep raising the cost of aggression.
To make matters worse, US President Donald Trump announced sending advanced Patriot missile systems to Ukraine, with Melania Trump, an unexpected ally of Kyiv, contributing to the White House’s decision. China threatens to back Russia even more strongly, complicating the situation further.
Slovakia has postponed adopting the sanctions, but Kallas remains optimistic that an agreement will be reached by the end of August at an informal EU ministers’ meeting. “It’s important that everyone hears the arguments and finds a compromise,” she said.
