EU Tightens Sanctions on Russia: War Rages On, Peace Remains a Distant Dream

The European Union and its allies are not backing down! At a recent summit, the EU adopted the 17th package of sanctions against Russia, aiming to severely limit its ability to wage an aggressive war in Ukraine. Yes, you read that right – the 17th package! As if the previous 16 weren’t enough to stop Kremlin’s war machine.

What’s new in this package?

The new sanctions package targets especially the Russian energy and financial sectors, including the notorious shadow tanker fleet smuggling oil. The EU has made it clear that Russian assets must remain frozen until Russia ends the war and compensates Ukraine for the damage. No diplomatic games here – this is pressure!

Support for Ukraine stronger than ever

The EU has pledged a whopping €30.6 billion in aid to Ukraine, with €3.5 billion already disbursed. Beyond financial aid, there is military, political, economic, and humanitarian support. Notably, the delivery of air defense systems and large-caliber ammunition is emphasized. In short, the EU spares no expense or effort to help Ukraine endure and win.

But problems persist

Hungary and Slovakia continue to cause headaches! Hungary blocked the formal adoption of EU conclusions on Ukraine, and Slovakia joined in opposing new sanctions. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban openly says he doesn’t want Ukraine in the EU because it would mean importing war. Is this a realistic stance or political posturing? The EU tries to bypass such blockades, but how long can it last?

Special tribunal for war crimes

Ukrainian President Zelensky signed an agreement to establish a special tribunal for crimes of aggression. Every war criminal must know they won’t get away with it! This is a big step towards justice, but a long road lies ahead.

What do the allies say?

The United States leads peace efforts and is ready to increase pressure on Russia. Trump even announced he would talk to Putin about ending the war, though he admitted it’s harder than it seems. NATO allies committed to investing at least 5% of GDP in defense by 2025, a direct response to Russian aggression.

Conclusion: The war continues, peace is far away

While the EU and allies tighten sanctions and support Ukraine, Russia shows no signs of backing down. Bombing of civilians and infrastructure continues, and political will for a ceasefire is absent. The EU is ready to increase pressure, but how long will it last and will it bring the desired peace?

What about you?

Do you think these sanctions packages will finally break Russia’s will to war? Or is this an endless power game where ordinary people pay the price? Drop a comment, crack a joke, or just share your thoughts – let the people’s voice be heard!
