EU and US: The End of an Era?
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is not sugarcoating it. While the EU tirelessly works to reduce tariffs with the US, she openly admits that relations between the two giants may never be the same again. Yes, you read that right – this could be the end of the friendship as we knew it!
At the 7th Franco-Italian Economic Forum in Rome, von der Leyen made it clear that the EU cannot be naive. The policies adopted by Donald Trump’s administration have left deep scars. Despite efforts to keep tariffs as low as possible, stability for businesses is on shaky ground.
Diversification or Escape?
The EU is not sitting idle. Von der Leyen highlighted that the EU is intensively working on strengthening and diversifying trade relations with partners outside the US. A whopping 80% of EU trade is directed towards countries other than the US. So, Brussels is clearly preparing for life without its biggest trading partner.
Green Deal Under Pressure?
While some claim the EU is abandoning its Green Deal, von der Leyen categorically denies this. Climate goals remain unchanged, but investments require predictability, not political zigzags. Clear goals and less bureaucracy are key, she says.
What Does This Mean for Us?
This situation casts a shadow of uncertainty over Europe’s economic stability. Will the EU manage to break free from the American embrace and find new allies? Or will trade wars continue behind the scenes while ordinary people pay the price?
If you think this is just the beginning of a big drama, you’re not far off. So, what do you think – is it time for the EU to finally turn its back on the US, or is this just a passing crisis? Drop a comment, maybe together we’ll figure out what’s next!
