Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz have nominated retired Major General Eyal Zamir as the Chief of Staff of the Israel Defense Forces. Zamir is currently the Director General of the Ministry of Defense and is the leading candidate to succeed Herzi Halevi, who has resigned. Candidates for high positions, including the IDF Chief of Staff, must undergo a review by the Advisory Committee for Senior Appointments and are then confirmed by a cabinet vote. Halevi cited security shortcomings.
