Fico’s Cold War with Zelensky: Slovakia Snubs Angry President but Will Meet Ukrainian PM

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico refuses to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, claiming there is no “rational reason” for such a meeting. Fico openly admits that Zelensky “hates” him because of his views on the war in Ukraine. However, he is willing to meet with Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, considering that dialogue more relevant between the two countries.

Fico also criticized Zelensky for halting the transit of Russian gas through Slovakia, costing the country millions of euros. He emphasized that Slovakia will not increase defense spending, and any additional funds should be directed towards civilian projects.

The Prime Minister expressed concern about the potential economic fallout if the EU completely bans Russian gas imports, as Slovakia would be the most vulnerable country in the EU. While supporting Ukraine’s EU membership, Fico believes it could bring more benefits to Slovakia than to the USA, provided Kyiv meets all necessary conditions.

This cold war between Fico and Zelensky exposes deep divisions in European politics over the war in Ukraine and sanctions on Russia. While some push for tougher measures, others worry about economic stability and pragmatic relations. Is Fico a voice of reason or just a stubborn rebel? Drop your thoughts below and let the debate begin!
