A fire on Leotar Mountain near Trebinje has erupted again, destroying everything in its path. The blaze started the day before yesterday in the village of Trebijovi, and by yesterday the entire northern side of the mountain was a burnt wasteland. The fire line stretches about 2.5 kilometers, consuming meadows, forests, and low vegetation. Firefighters are battling strong winds and difficult terrain, while a helicopter from the Ministry of Interior of Republika Srpska dropped 50 liters of water at a time last night in an attempt to extinguish the flames. Local residents are panicked as the fire threatened households, and one villager lost 30 out of 33 goats, which are now wandering in the fiery chaos. Trebinje’s mayor, Mirko Ćurić, suspects the fire was caused by human negligence, and the police are involved in the investigation. Temperatures reached 40 degrees Celsius, and the fire is spreading rapidly, threatening almost the entire town. This is not the first time a fire has broken out in this area — five or six days ago the same spot was already hit by flames. Now the question is how much more nature and property will be destroyed before the situation is brought under control. Firefighters and local authorities continue the fight, but with these conditions and human factors, it’s uncertain if they will succeed in time. Got thoughts on this fiery disaster?
