First Nest of Loggerhead Sea Turtle Discovered on Ada Bojana: Will We Finally Save This Rare Species?

On Ada Bojana in Montenegro, the first confirmed nest of the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) has been discovered, marking a huge step forward in protecting this strictly protected species along the Montenegrin coast. This historic finding confirms that turtles are increasingly choosing Montenegrin beaches as nesting sites. The nest was discovered by the director of the Institute of Marine Biology, Dr. Mirko Đurović, on June 25th, and the location has been clearly marked and protected. The incubation period for the eggs is about 60 days, with hatchlings expected around August 20th. Last year, the first hatching of young turtles was recorded on Velika Plaža, but without systematic monitoring. This year, thanks to a project researching and mapping sea turtle nesting sites, carried out by the Institute of Marine Biology at the University of Montenegro with support from the Public Enterprise for Marine Assets Management of Montenegro, the nest was timely identified and protected. Visitors are asked to respect the nesting area and contribute to its protection. This discovery brings hope for further findings in the coming weeks and represents an important step in preserving these exceptional marine creatures. Everyone is urged to behave responsibly to help protect the loggerhead sea turtles on the Montenegrin coast.
