On the beautiful Croatian island of Korčula, a foreign worker who had been legally residing there for two years decided to give birth all alone — no doctor, no midwife, no help whatsoever! The newborn was quickly airlifted by helicopter to a hospital in Split, while the mother was urgently transported to the General Hospital in Dubrovnik, where she is reportedly in the psychiatric ward. Why did the woman take such a drastic step? It seems she hid her pregnancy from everyone, even her roommates and employer. She is described as modest, hardworking, and withdrawn, but clearly carrying a heavy burden alone.
What’s even more unbelievable is that she returned three times to the spot where she left the baby to check on it. The baby, according to unofficial information, is now in good health at the Split hospital. The mother, on the other hand, is in psychiatric care and reportedly plans to take custody of the child.
This case has sparked a storm of emotions and questions. How is it possible that something like this happens in the 21st century, in a country with a developed healthcare system?
