Foreign Worker Gave Birth Alone on Korčula and Left Baby Beside House in a Basket

Imagine a scene straight out of a horror movie, but this is real life! On the beautiful Croatian island of Korčula, a foreign worker who had been legally residing there for two years decided to give birth all alone — no doctor, no midwife, no help whatsoever! Yes, you read that right. The woman gave birth, placed the baby in a basket, and left it beside the house where she was staying. Is this a scene from a creepy thriller or reality? Unfortunately, it’s reality.

The newborn was quickly airlifted by helicopter to a hospital in Split, while the mother was urgently transported to the General Hospital in Dubrovnik, where she is reportedly in the psychiatric ward. Why did the woman take such a drastic step? It seems she hid her pregnancy from everyone, even her roommates and employer. She is described as modest, hardworking, and withdrawn, but clearly carrying a heavy burden alone.

What’s even more unbelievable is that she returned three times to the spot where she left the baby to check on it. The baby, according to unofficial information, is now in good health at the Split hospital. The mother, on the other hand, is in psychiatric care and reportedly plans to take custody of the child.

This case has sparked a storm of emotions and questions. How is it possible that something like this happens in the 21st century, in a country with a developed healthcare system? Is this a sign that some people are still left to fend for themselves, without support or help? Or is this just the tip of the iceberg of problems faced by foreign workers?

Doctors and emergency services found themselves in an unbelievable situation. Luka Lulić, director of the Emergency Medical Service of the Dubrovnik-Neretva County, said that in his 27 years of work, he had never experienced a woman giving birth in an ambulance. The baby was born in the ambulance, and the emergency vehicle failed to reach the hospital in time.

This case shines a light on serious issues: the lack of adequate healthcare for foreign workers, the fear and stigma that force them to hide pregnancies, and ultimately, the dangers that arise when pregnant women are left alone at the most critical moment of their lives.

If you think this is just another sad story, think again. This is a wake-up call for all of us. Will we allow such things to happen again? Will we close our eyes to problems right at our doorstep? Or will we finally start caring for those who are often invisible but part of our community?

While the baby fights for life in the hospital and the mother recovers, we are left with questions and the realization that life can be cruel and unpredictable. What do you think about this unbelievable case? Is it just an unfortunate coincidence or a systemic problem? Drop a comment, share your thoughts, or just say — wow, that’s one crazy story!

Either way, this story won’t be forgotten easily. Korčula, Croatia, and the entire region now have another topic to ponder and discuss. And remember, life writes the most unbelievable scripts — you just have to know how to read them.
