Former Kosovo Prime Minister Sentenced for Abuse of Office in Veterans Case

Scandal of the Year: Former Kosovo Prime Minister and Nine Others Sentenced for Abuse of Office!

Is this yet another proof that power and politics go hand in hand with corruption? The Basic Court in Pristina today delivered a verdict shaking Kosovo’s political scene – former Prime Minister Agim Çeku and nine others were sentenced to one year in prison for abuse of official position in the case known as the “veterans” scandal.

Who are the accused and what happened?

Besides Çeku, Rustem Berisha, Shkumbin Demaliaj, Sadik Halitjaha, Çele Gashi, Shukri Buja, Ahmet Daku, Faik Fazliu, Džavit Jašari, and Fadilj Shurhaj were all found guilty of abusing their positions related to claims for veteran status, causing a huge uproar.

The court was clear: The crime is proven!

Judge Gazmend Bahtiri, presiding over the panel, stated beyond reasonable doubt that the accused committed the criminal offense. However, not all 19 claims for veteran status were individually identified, so a separate review of the procedure was suggested.

Who was acquitted and why?

In the same case, Nuredin Ljuštaku and Smajl Eljezaj were acquitted because, according to the court, they did not have the status of officials. So justice was partially served, but the bitter taste remains as many were still convicted.

What about the pensions?

Earlier, the court rejected the prosecution’s proposal to temporarily suspend pension payments to disputed beneficiaries. The reasoning? The request does not directly concern the accused but relates to social protection investigations. The prosecution has the right to appeal the verdict within 15 days, so we’ll see if justice gets tougher.

Why does this matter?

This case casts a shadow over Kosovo’s political elite and reveals how vulnerable the system is to abuse. One year in prison for a former prime minister and nine others might sound like a punishment, but is it enough to stop corruption?

Conclusion

If you think politics is a clean game, think again. This case shows power can be a dangerous drug, and justice is sometimes slow and uncertain. What do you think – is this verdict just a drop in the ocean or the beginning of the end for abuses in Kosovo? Drop a comment, crack a joke, or just share your thoughts – let the people’s voice be heard!
