Imagine a man who started as a painter, painting apartments at just 14 years old, and today owns a company with over 1000 employees! Džemal Memagić, the mayor of Olovo, is not only a successful businessman but also the only mayor in Bosnia who does not take a salary – he donates his salary to students and pupils. Yes, you read that right! While many politicians fill their pockets, Memagić shows it can be done differently.
From Painter to Textile Industry Leader
It all started when Džemal was 14, painting apartments, and at 19 he opened a paint shop. He didn’t stop there – he completed tailoring training and worked in a textile company while still working as a painter. Together with his wife, he founded the company Alma Ras in the ground floor of their home. Today, that same company employs over 1000 workers and is a leader in the Bosnian textile market.
Donating Salary Instead of Taking It
Memagić is known for not taking a salary as the mayor of Olovo. Instead, he donates his salary to students and pupils. As he says, “everything state-owned belongs to someone else,” and he wants to help young people because he himself had a tough childhood. His philosophy is clear: when you can, you should help others.
Where Have All the Craftsmen Gone?
Džemal warns that there are fewer and fewer craftsmen like him, and soon there will be a problem with who will fix cars and do skilled trades. His story is also a reminder of the importance of crafts and the value of work, which are often forgotten today.
Family Business and Success
Alma Ras is a family business that started with old machines and sewing for markets, and today collaborates with many well-known brands. It all began thanks to an aunt in Germany, and now Alma Ras is synonymous with quality and success in the market.
Is This an Example for Others?
While many politicians and businessmen look only out for themselves, Džemal Memagić shows it can be different. His story is an inspiration and a call to think – what if everyone with power and money decided to help young people and the community?
If this sounds like a fairy tale, maybe it’s time to look at reality with different eyes. So, what do you think about a mayor who doesn’t take a salary? Is it courage or madness? Drop a comment, maybe together we’ll find more heroes like him!
