Golubac Gets a 10 Million Dinar Cinema Hall – Cultural Boom or Just Empty Talk?

Folks, the small town of Golubac on the Danube is finally getting something that looks like a cultural center! Yes, you read that right – 10 million dinars for renovating the cinema hall! But wait, it’s not just a cinema; it’s a modern multifunctional hall for concerts, theater plays, conferences, and much more. Nikola Selaković and the mayor Nebojša Mijović signed the funding agreement, and the state has invested over 2.3 billion dinars in cultural infrastructure across Serbia in the last ten years.

Sounds great, right? But let’s think a bit. The project’s total value is about 32 million dinars, with the Golubac municipality contributing 22 million. That means the local government has to struggle with a limited budget to secure co-financing. Still, Selaković praises the enthusiasm and will of the locals, which is commendable.

This project is part of a broader strategy for cultural and tourist development in the region. Golubac already has a renovated library, museum, and cultural-tourist info center, and now it’s starting archaeological excavations at the tower site. All this sounds like Golubac wants to become a culturally recognizable destination, which is definitely praiseworthy.

But is 10 million dinars for a cinema hall really enough money to create something lasting and truly revive cultural life? And how much will the local people actually benefit from this? And will this investment just be another project that stands empty and unused?

Still, we can’t deny that this is a sign the state cares about small communities and wants to develop culture and tourism there. With the construction of the fast Danube highway, Golubac is becoming closer to Belgrade, which can further help development.

In any case, we’ll have to see if this investment will be the start of a new golden age for Golubac or just another media story. What do you think? Will the cinema hall really change life in this small town, or is it just another project for photos and empty words? Drop a comment, let’s see who’s optimistic and who’s skeptical!
