Greece is Late Again, Serbia is Ready!
Did you know Serbia has been ready for three to four months to implement a unified toll tag system with Greece? Yes, you read that right! But Greece is still dragging its feet on launching its part of the system, so the July 1 start date is off the table.
What’s the deal?
It’s about an electronic tag — a small device placed on the windshield that allows contactless toll payments. Serbia already uses it in North Macedonia, Montenegro, Croatia, and soon in Republika Srpska. The system saves time and nerves at toll booths, letting drivers zoom through without stopping.
Why is Greece late?
According to Aleksandra Sofronijević from the Ministry of Construction, Infrastructure, and Transport, Greece hasn’t completed all formalities and contract signings with concessionaires. The software is ready, Serbia is ready, but Greece isn’t. An online meeting with Greek representatives confirmed things are on track but July 1 is a no-go.
What does this mean for drivers?
For now, drivers heading to Greece can’t use the unified toll tag. But good news: the situation at the Evzoni border crossing has improved significantly — with Bulgaria joining the Schengen zone, queues are shorter and more customs officers are on duty. So less waiting, but still no electronic toll payments.
Holiday hassles?
Unfortunately, unwanted incidents like car break-ins are not rare, especially among Serbian tourists in Greece. So besides waiting for the system to kick in, be careful on the road and during your vacation.
Bottom line?
Serbia is ready to roll out the unified toll tag with Greece, but Greece is still lagging. While we wait, drivers can expect shorter border lines but should stay alert on the road and during their holidays.
If you’ve used the tag or have border crossing stories, drop a comment — did this wait annoy you or did you manage somehow? Or maybe you have a hilarious travel tale from Greece? Share it so we can all laugh or cringe together!
Fast, easy, no stopping — but only when Greece says so!
Serbia is ready, the software is ready, and you? We’re just waiting for Greece to hit the start button so we can finally fly through toll booths without stopping. Until then, patience is a virtue, and border queues are our reality.
Get ready, the tag is the future, but Greece is still holding the brake!
