HDZ and Croatian Sovereignists in Vukovar: Secret Deals or Political Stability?

HDZ and Croatian Sovereignists in Vukovar: Secret Deals or Political Stability?

Today, Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković refused to confirm media reports that HDZ in Vukovar has made a coalition deal with Croatian Sovereignists (HS) and the Homeland Movement (DP) to form a majority in the city council. Plenković called for patience and emphasized that HDZ always aims for stability and functionality.

The situation in Vukovar is not unique; similar issues with constituting city councils exist in other parts of Croatia. HDZ adheres to the principle of territoriality, allowing local organizations to lead political processes. Plenković highlighted that HDZ won 49% of municipalities, towns, and counties in the last local elections, demonstrating their strength.

According to unofficial information, the second attempt to constitute the Vukovar city council could be successful thanks to an agreement between HS and HDZ. Vukovar Mayor Marijan Pavliček from HS has not confirmed these reports, but it is known that HS and HDZ were already in coalition with the Homeland Movement in the previous assembly.

The first city council session in June failed because the appointment of committees and council presidents was not completed. Negotiations between HS and HDZ are ongoing to secure a majority, including councilors from HSA, DOO, HDZ, and HNS.

Plenković also expressed confidence in the new minister Nataša Mikuš Žigman, who is expected to receive parliamentary support tomorrow. She will play a key role in preparing Croatia’s positions for the new seven-year EU financial framework, especially in regional development and island affairs.

This situation in Vukovar reveals deep political games and behind-the-scenes negotiations, where stability and functionality are often used as excuses for deals that are not always transparent. Will the citizens of Vukovar and Croatia accept such political maneuvers or demand real change? Only time will tell.

So, what do you think about these secret deals? Politics or power play? Drop a comment, maybe together we can unravel this political mess!
