HDZ and Suverenists Finally Form Majority in Vukovar – But Without Homeland Movement!

Vukovar, a city with a rich and painful history, might finally get a stable government. After a failed first attempt, HDZ and the Croatian Suverenists have reportedly reached an agreement to form a majority in the Vukovar City Council. But wait, it’s not that simple! The Homeland Movement, which was a key player in local politics, has been left out, and Mayor Marijan Pavliček, president of the Suverenists, has not yet confirmed the deal.

The Vukovar City Council has 19 members. The Suverenists hold five seats, the Homeland Movement four, HDZ three, SDSS and DSS two each, and HNS, DOO, and SDP one each. In the previous term, HDZ governed in coalition with the Homeland Movement, but after the May elections, the Homeland Movement lost its majority, and their mayoral candidate Domagoj Bilić was defeated.

The first constitutive session of the City Council in mid-June failed because the appointment of committees and candidates for president and vice-president was not completed. Now, negotiations are underway for a new majority consisting of HDZ, Suverenists, HNS, and DOO. Pavliček has clearly ruled out any cooperation with the Homeland Movement after fierce conflicts during the campaign.

This situation sheds light on deep divisions in Vukovar’s local politics, where the city’s interests and political games often clash. Will stability finally come to Vukovar, or will political tensions continue? It seems HDZ is ready to team up with the Suverenists to take control, but without the Homeland Movement, the question remains how stable this coalition will be.

If you thought local politics was boring, think again! Vukovar proves that even in small communities, big battles are fought. So, what do you think about this political tangle? Is this the end for the Homeland Movement in Vukovar or just the start of a new drama? Drop a comment, let the people’s voice be heard!
