Heatwave and Electricity: How Temperatures Skyrocketed Serbia’s Power Bills to Unseen Heights

Think summer is just for fun? Think again! Serbia faced a shocking electricity bill surge this June. Thanks to scorching heat, electricity consumption skyrocketed like never before. On June 26 alone, a whopping 83.48 million kilowatt-hours were consumed — a 15.77% increase compared to the same day last year. Vojvodina led the charge with 24.94 million kWh, nearly 20% more, while Belgrade followed with 23.68 million kWh, a staggering 25.63% increase from last year! Is this a sign that climate change is rewriting the rules, or have we just forgotten how to save energy?

The heat forced people to crank up air conditioners and cooling devices like never before, and the numbers don’t lie. The day before, June 25, consumption was 78.52 million kWh, 3.64% higher than last year, with Vojvodina again topping the list at 23.37 million kWh. But it’s not all doom and gloom — weekends like June 28 saw a 4.2% drop in consumption, proving that cutting back is possible.

This electricity consumption explosion isn’t just a number — it means higher bills for citizens and pressure on Serbia’s electricity distribution system (EDS). Who’s ready to explain how we’ll survive these summer months without emptying our wallets? As the climate changes and bills rise, one has to ask — where’s the saving and responsibility?

If you thought this was just statistics, think again. These numbers are real, and the bills come every month. Maybe it’s time we all start thinking about how not to let heat and electricity together ruin us. Or we’ll just nod and wait for the next bill to shock us even more.

What about you? How much has your electricity bill jumped this summer? Already started saving or is your AC running non-stop? Share your stories — maybe together we’ll find a solution, or at least a good reason to laugh while paying the bills!
