Imagine being on your favorite holiday spot, the beautiful Greek island of Thasos, and suddenly waking up to screams and smoke swallowing the sky! Yes, you read that right – a hellish wildfire broke out on Wednesday, July 9, in the Glikadi area, just above Limenas beach, turning paradise into a nightmare.
Firefighters fought like lions – dozens of them, with 11 fire trucks, working around the clock to contain the fiery beast. But the strong Greek winds, as if sent to fan the flames, were unstoppable. Tourists panicked, following updates on the “Forum Thasos” group, while some even fled the island at night by ferry, leaving their holiday dreams in smoke.
One Romanian tourist, Dragan Dan Adrian, live-streamed the hellish scenes on Facebook, desperately writing, “Girl, I have nowhere to run!”. To make matters worse, some parts of the island lost power all night, while smoke and the smell of burning choked the northwest part of the island.
The mayor of Oropós, Yorgos Yasímakis, confirmed massive damage, especially in the village of Aspro Horio, which was lush and green but is now almost destroyed. Glikadi beach is completely burned, and many suspect the fire started right there.
Although firefighters managed to reduce the fire’s intensity by morning, the danger is not over yet. Tourists hope their vacations will be saved, but nature has shown how powerful and unpredictable it is.
This fire is not just a local problem – it’s a wake-up call for the whole region and the world. Climate change, droughts, and negligence can lead to disasters that destroy nature and human lives. Will we finally realize how important it is to protect our planet, or will we wait for the next catastrophe to wake us up?
