Heroes of Košare and Paštrik: Do We Truly Appreciate Them?

When you hear about Košare and Paštrik, most people think of heroism, sacrifice, and defending the homeland. But do we really appreciate them as much as they deserve? Durđević Stamenkovski made it clear: “You gave everything, just so we could be here!” This is not just a phrase; it’s the blood, sweat, and tears shed by our heroes on those battlefields. Without Košare and Paštrik, there would be no Serbia as we know it – no oath, no resistance, no pride. Yet, how much do schools actually teach about them? How much is their sacrifice truly respected?

At the same time, while heroism was being celebrated, violent clashes erupted in the streets of Belgrade, casting a shadow over the Vidovdan celebration, one of the most important Serbian holidays. Milos Garić, an advisor for public information, condemned the violence and emphasized that attention should have been focused on Kosovo and Metohija, not on hooliganism.

These two events show how difficult it is to maintain unity and respect for those who gave their lives for the homeland, while facing internal problems and conflicts. The heroes of Košare and Paštrik are pillars of our national consciousness, but do we truly appreciate them? Or have we forgotten their real value while caught up in daily politics and conflicts?

If you care about truth and respect for our heroes, maybe it’s time to ask yourself – what are we really doing to make sure their sacrifice isn’t in vain? And if you have your own take, feel free to share it – this isn’t just a story about the past, it’s about our future.
