HNB Under Fire: Ruling Party Extends Terms While Inflation Runs Wild!

Imagine this: the very people responsible for controlling inflation at the Croatian National Bank (HNB) have done absolutely nothing to stop it — yet their terms are being extended as if everything is just fine! Yes, you read that right. While citizens suffer from rising prices and struggle to make ends meet, politicians in the parliament decide to keep the same people running the HNB, and they do it without any public debate!

Drama in Parliament

On the last day of the parliamentary session, when most are thinking about summer holidays, the ruling party slipped in a proposal to reappoint Bojan Fras and Michael Faulend as vice governors of the HNB. These two have already been part of the HNB Council and, according to opposition MPs from Most, have done nothing to curb inflation. Nikola Grmoja from Most sharply criticized the ruling party, calling them a disgrace for extending the mandates of people who only spent money and showed no social empathy.

Opposition Silent?

Even worse, the opposition did not publicly announce any debate on this crucial issue. Only the Most club publicly expressed dissatisfaction. Grmoja accused the ruling party of acting as if it is easier to attack Ustaše than to fight for the citizens. Marin Miletić, also from Most, added that these officials earn net salaries of several thousand euros and enjoy huge benefits but have done nothing concrete to prevent inflation.

HDZ’s Defense

HDZ representative Pero Ćosić partially agreed that they could have helped the government more and that more could have been done, but they still decided to give these people another term. This sparked even harsher criticism from Most, who believe that inaction is being rewarded and that it is a shame.

Procedural Chaos and Pressure

Grmoja reminded that he had previously proposed the dismissal of the HNB Council, but the Speaker of Parliament, Gordan Jandroković, did not allow it to be considered. He announced legislative changes that would allow dismissal if appointment is possible. During the debate, Deputy Speaker Furio Radin even gave Grmoja a warning, who continued speaking despite receiving four warnings. Grmoja claims the warnings were due to his criticism and that it was unfair.

What Do Citizens Get?

While inflation rages and prices rise, people with high salaries at the HNB continue to enjoy their positions. The opposition claims citizens get no benefit from these personnel decisions. Boris Lalovac from SDPA clearly stated that the HNB has not done its job and that they cannot support such candidates.

Conclusion: Shame or System?

This situation at the HNB is a prime example of how political elites protect their people regardless of results. Inflation is a problem affecting every citizen, but those responsible for controlling it not only fail to do their job but get their terms extended as a reward for inaction. Is this a shame or the system? You decide.
