How Was Dolly Created?
Scientists at the Roslin Institute in Edinburgh, led by Ian Wilmut and Keith Campbell, took the nucleus from a mammary gland cell of an adult sheep and transferred it into an egg cell whose own nucleus had been removed. This egg cell was then implanted into a surrogate mother, resulting in the birth of Dolly – a genetically identical copy of the adult sheep.
Why Is Dolly Important?
Dolly proved that differentiated cells from an adult organism can be reprogrammed to create a whole organism. Before her, this was thought impossible! This breakthrough opened doors to regenerative medicine, gene therapies, and conservation of endangered species.

Dolly lived for six and a half years, which is shorter than the average lifespan of a sheep. In 2003, she was diagnosed with a lung tumor linked to a virus, leading to her euthanasia on February 14 of the same year.
