Iran and Israel: Ceasefire or Just a Breather Before a New War?

Iran and Israel: Ceasefire or Just a Breather Before a New War?

Is the ceasefire between Iran and Israel just a sham or the real start of peace? Iranian Defense Minister Aziz Nasirzadeh has made it clear that the Islamic Republic does not trust the current ceasefire with Israel. After Israel launched a sudden and massive air campaign against Iranian nuclear and military sites on June 13, the conflict lasted 12 days, leaving hundreds of civilian casualties on both sides – over 100 Iranians and 27 Israelis.

Iran responded with rocket attacks that killed dozens of Israelis, and nuclear talks between Iran and the US, scheduled for June 15 in Muscat, were canceled. The US joined the offensive on June 22 in the “Midnight Hammer” operation, using B2 bombers and Tomahawk cruise missiles to destroy key Iranian nuclear facilities in Natanz, Fordow, and Isfahan.

The ceasefire, which came into effect on June 24 brokered by then-US President Donald Trump, stopped the air war, but its long-term sustainability remains questionable. Iranian reformist newspapers Shargh described it as legally fragile and unpredictable, lacking international legal basis or support from global institutions.

To make matters worse, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently stated that Israel has successfully set back Iran’s nuclear program but hinted that the conflict with the Islamic Republic is not over.

Meanwhile, Iranian President Masud Pezeshkian was wounded in an Israeli airstrike on June 16 during a meeting of the Supreme National Security Council in Tehran, further escalating tensions. The attack involved six bombs or missiles targeting the building’s entry points to prevent movement and evacuation of high-ranking officials.

This sounds like a thriller plot, but it’s reality – a war that could flare up again at any moment. Iran is ready to give a “firm and painful response” to any new act of aggression, while Israel is not backing down from its military objectives.

Is the ceasefire just a pause in a bloody conflict or the beginning of real peace? Neither side believes it. And us? We can only watch and wait for the next move on this dangerous chessboard of the Middle East.

If you think this is the end or the start of something bigger, drop a comment below and tell us what you think – will Iran and Israel ever truly stop fighting, or is this just the prelude to an even fiercer conflict?
