Irish and American Tourists in Croatia: Why Skip Split and Watch Your Wallet!

Split: Small Town, Huge Crowds, and Even Bigger Prices!

Croatia’s tourist season is in full swing, and social media is flooded with travelers’ impressions from all over the world. Two foreign influencers, an Irish and an American TikToker, recently visited Croatia and shared their honest experiences — and it’s not all sunshine and rainbows as Instagram might suggest.

First and foremost: skip Split! Yes, you read that right. Both agreed that Split is a small town with massive crowds that were unbearable even in June, which isn’t even peak season. The atmosphere was way too intense, and there’s not much to do except visit Diocletian’s Palace or take trips to national parks or nearby islands by boat. Three days in Split? One day is already too much, they say.

Hvar: Paradise or Rip-off?

Unlike Split, Hvar was their base — for a whopping 12 days! Many were surprised by how long they stayed, but they say they could easily enjoy 10 great days there. The last two days, however, they were a bit lost on what to do next. Boat trips were a hit — they took two and loved them.

But beware of the Blue Cave! Entrance costs 24 euros per person, and what you get is a tiny boat ride around the corner, a quick look inside the blue cave, and that’s it. A total rip-off and waste of money, they say.

Prices That Hurt Your Wallet

Taxis? Ridiculously expensive! ATMs? All charge fees, so bring cash. Beaches are rocky and uncomfortable to walk on, and sea urchins are everywhere — literally! Better bring your own beach shoes, food, and drinks because everything is overpriced. An energy drink shocked them at 6 euros.

Learn Some Croatian!

At the end, both recommend learning a few basic Croatian phrases before coming. It’ll make navigating easier and might save you some euros.

The Bottom Line?

Croatia is beautiful but not for everyone and not always cheap. If you’re planning a trip, think carefully about where you go and how much you’re ready to spend. And Split? Maybe really skip it or spend just one day there, as these two travelers suggest.

Have you been to Croatia? Do you agree with them or are you the opposite — totally in love? Drop a comment and let’s see who’s right!
