Ivan Bosiljčić, one of Serbia’s most respected actors, openly admitted that he refused a film role because it contained scenes that directly offended his religious beliefs. In an interview, he emphasized that Orthodox faith is an important support in his private life and professional decisions. “I refused a role where my character was supposed to kill a priest and kick the communion. There are boundaries of art that I do not want to cross,” Bosiljčić said honestly.
The popular actor, who has also gained fame in Russia, stresses that he sets personal spiritual boundaries and does not want to violate them for art or career. Even in a dream, he says, he would confess because his principles are sacred and he does not make compromises. Bosiljčić points out the responsibility artists have towards society, especially younger generations, and carefully chooses roles so as not to negatively influence youth.
“After the Ribnikaru tragedy, everyone asked how much influence we have on society,” the actor said. He believes that Orthodox faith helps distinguish artistic roles that contribute to the spiritual growth of the audience from those that can be harmful. “For me, the most important parameter has become whether the role will bring spiritual benefit to the viewer. Art can be dangerous,” Bosiljčić warns.
This statement raises the question of where the boundaries of artistic freedom lie and how responsible artists should be towards their beliefs and society. Bosiljčić is an example of an actor who does not compromise when it comes to his religious and moral principles, which provokes various reactions in the public. Is art truly free if such boundaries exist? Or is this a sign that the world is returning to traditional values? Share your thoughts — maybe you have the answer to this eternal dilemma!
