The largest colony of griffon vultures in Serbia is located in the Uvac reserve. Experts from the Foundation for the Protection of Birds of Prey are currently marking part of the youngest population of these birds, using satellite tracking that lasts several years. Griffon vultures are the largest birds in the region with a wingspan of up to three meters and are known as caring parents that lay only one egg per year. Marking the birds provides valuable data about their life and migrations, as these birds often roam the world and return to the colony after 5-6 years to start a family. The colony in Uvac has grown from an initial ten birds thirty years ago to about 200, and there are plans to reintroduce vultures to eastern Serbia as well. Griffon vultures are important for nature as they feed mainly on carrion, thus cleaning the environment.
