Kosovo Doubles Imports from Serbia: Who Even Cares About the Trade Deficit?

Looks like Kosovo decided to double down on imports from Serbia this year! In the first five months, imports jumped from 42 million euros to a whopping 91 million euros — that’s more than double! But while imports are skyrocketing, exports are taking a nosedive — down by 12.7 million euros compared to last year in the same period.

What does this mean? Kosovo is facing a massive trade deficit. Imports in the first five months hit a staggering 2.76 billion euros, while exports fell to just 0.36 billion euros. The difference? A jaw-dropping 2.4 billion euros in the red!

Economists blame deep structural problems in Kosovo’s economy. A weak production base, lack of investment in innovation, and unfavorable fiscal policies are pushing Kosovo into even greater dependence on imports. Local producers can’t compete, and the government isn’t stepping up.

As these numbers climb, the big question is — who’s going to foot the bill? Will Kosovo keep sinking into this economic whirlpool, or will someone finally back domestic production?
