Kranjčevićeva Stadium Reconstruction: Is Zagreb Throwing 44 Million Euros Down the Drain?

The stadium on Kranjčevićeva Street in Zagreb is undergoing a total transformation, but is this really progress or just a waste of money? The main stands have disappeared, the pitch has turned yellow, and the foundations have already been concreted. The works started at the end of April, and just two and a half months later, the stadium looks completely unrecognizable. The floodlights that once lit up the matches have not yet been removed, even though they won’t be used in the new stadium. All this while waiting for a decision on the new owner, as the current second-division club Rudeš cannot play night matches at this stadium. The City of Zagreb has decided to give itself more time to decide who will get the stadium, while the works continue. Behind the eastern stand, a space for parking has already been cleared, which might be the only bright spot in this chaos. According to optimistic announcements, the reconstruction should be completed in 18 months, with a total project cost of around 44 million euros from the city budget. Is this a smart investment or a waste of taxpayers’ money? Check out the stadium’s condition and judge for yourself. If you have an opinion, feel free to share it — maybe you know what’s really going on here!
