Blackberries Cost 1,600 Dinars: The Fruit Disaster That Will Shock You!

Fruit at the Market or a Luxury? Imagine buying a kilogram of blackberries for a staggering 1,600 dinars! Yes, you read that right! After cherries hit 1,100 dinars per kilogram and proudly held the title of the most expensive fruit, blackberries have now taken the crown. At Belgrade markets, a kilogram of this fruit costs a dizzying 1,600 dinars, and the season is already in full swing! While we would expect prices to drop as the season progresses, they remain as high as mountains.

Why Are Prices So High? The answer is simple but painful – a catastrophic harvest! Producers have suffered huge losses due to bad weather conditions: frost, hail, and drought. The drop in yield for apricots and cherries ranges from 30 to 80 percent, and in some parts of Serbia, like western Serbia, the yield has fallen by as much as 80 percent compared to last year. This means there is simply less fruit, while demand remains the same or even higher.

How Does This Affect Buyers and Producers? Producers try to compensate for losses with high prices, while buyers, due to the prices, buy fruit piece by piece rather than by the kilogram. The average price of apricots and peaches has jumped from last year’s 150-200 dinars to as much as 300 dinars per kilogram. Hypermarkets, which usually have lower prices, are also forced to import fruit, mostly from Greece, because domestic production cannot meet demand.

Import: A Rescue or a Problem? Although imports can help stabilize the market, they are not without problems. Due to cold waves, neighboring countries like Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova, and even Macedonia have also been hit by bad weather, meaning imports cannot fully solve the fruit deficit problem.

What Lies Ahead? Experts advise producers to shift to more resilient fruit varieties that can withstand unfavorable climatic conditions. However, this is a long-term solution, and for now, we face high prices and a shortage of favorite fruits on our tables.

Conclusion This year, fruit is scarce and more expensive than ever. Buying fruit has become a luxury, and producers are struggling to survive. If you thought fruit prices at the market were just a passing phase, think again – this is a serious crisis that will affect us all.

What about you? Have you already paid for a kilogram of blackberries as if buying gold? Or have you decided to skip fruit this year? Drop a comment, let’s see who’s ready to pay for this fruit madness!
