Fake Sick Leaves in Serbia: How Summer Vacations Are Killing Factories and the Economy!
Every year, from May to September, Serbia faces a problem that threatens to collapse its economy – fake sick leaves. Yes, you read that right! More than a third of employees in some factories simply disappear from their workplaces, and the reason? Sick leaves lasting up to a month, while they actually enjoy vacations or work on their farms.
Factories on the Brink of Closure
Foreign companies operating in Serbia are sounding the alarm. Production processes are endangered, and some have already been forced to reduce or even close their plants. Imagine this – because of fake sick leaves, factories cannot function, and the loss is not only for employers but also for local governments that rely on taxes and contributions from employees.
Who’s to Blame? Employees or the System?
Most employees use sick leave as an extended vacation, ruining the business environment in Serbia. While employers suffer, the state and local communities lose millions. The director of the Health Institute, Zlatibor Lončar, warns that the problem is especially severe during summer when people leave work to go to their farms or on vacation.
The Solution? Electronic Sick Leave System!
To stop this chaos, an e-sick leave system has been introduced. It is expected to be fully operational across Serbia by the end of the year. The electronic system will allow easier control, faster detection of abuses, and reduce paperwork. Employers will be able to form commissions to verify the legitimacy of sick leaves, and health centers will be obliged to monitor suspicious and long-term sick leaves.
Economy on Thin Ice
According to the Serbian Chamber of Commerce, abuses of sick leave are so severe that some companies have already closed their plants during summer months. The most affected sectors are metal, electrical, textile, food industries, and communal services. The IMF has also noticed strange figures and warned about the high number of fake sick leaves in Serbia.
What’s Next?
The solution is not only in the electronic system. There is a need to shorten the period during which employers must pay sick leave compensation, implement more effective control mechanisms, and enforce laws more strictly. Without these measures, Serbia will continue to lose workforce and investments, and the economy will deteriorate.
Conclusion
Fake sick leaves are not just a problem for employers but for the entire country. While some enjoy vacations at the expense of factories, Serbia pays the price – plants close, jobs are lost, and the economy sinks. The electronic sick leave system is a light at the end of the tunnel, but the question remains whether it will be implemented quickly and effectively enough.
