Texas Floods or Fake Drama?
In July 2023, central Texas was hit by heavy rains causing flash floods. Some areas received up to 30 centimeters of rain, resulting in massive property damage and sadly, loss of lives. But while Texans were genuinely suffering, a viral video started circulating on social media claiming to show the scale of the disaster — but here’s the catch.
The viral video is a mashup of clips from India and Spain!
Analysis reveals that the video includes footage not just from Texas, but also from Chennai, India (December 2022), where Cyclone Michaung caused devastating floods and five deaths. Another clip shows a truck being swept away in India (August 2022). The third segment shows floodwaters carrying cars in Valencia, Spain (October 2022).
Why does this matter?
Such fake compilations spread panic and misinformation. People outside Texas or those not following local news might think the situation is worse than it is or that it’s some global catastrophe. In reality, while Texas floods were serious, the viral video is just a mix of other countries’ disasters.
