Lignite in Montenegro: So Much for ‘Green Energy’!
Did you know Montenegro produced a whopping 1.62 million tons of lignite last year? Yes, you read that right – 1.62 million tons! While the world slowly turns its back on coal and hunts for green alternatives, Montenegro seems stuck in the last century.
Where Does All That Lignite Go?
Out of the total lignite produced, 1.39 million tons were used for electricity production. The rest, about 20.1 thousand tons, went to industry (9 thousand tons) and other sectors (11.1 thousand tons). So lignite is still the main player in Montenegro’s energy game.
Why Is This a Problem?
Lignite is the dirtiest form of coal. Burning lignite releases huge amounts of carbon dioxide and other harmful gases. While Europe strives to cut emissions and switch to renewables, Montenegro keeps digging and burning lignite like there’s no tomorrow.
Environmental Challenges and the Future
It’s clear Montenegro faces serious sustainability issues. Although there are plans to develop green hydrogen and cleaner technologies, lignite still dominates. Will the country wake up before it’s too late?
Fun Fact to End On
Did you know that just for electricity production, 1.39 million tons of lignite were consumed? That’s a massive environmental burden, and the question is how long citizens will bear the consequences.
If this sounds like a scene from an industrial horror story, you’re not far off. But hey, maybe it’s time we all turn on the light in our heads and ask – where are we headed?
So, what do you think about this lignite frenzy? Is Montenegro ready for a green revolution, or will we keep smoking for a long time? Drop a comment and let’s see who’s for and who’s against!
