Imagine this: the Greek island of Thassos, famous for its pine forests and olive groves, has turned into a blazing inferno raging for over six hours! The fire broke out last night around 11 PM near Glikadi, close to the port of Limenas, and quickly spread, engulfing a vast forest area. Temperatures on the island soared to a staggering 50 degrees Celsius, while thermal cameras in Athens recorded melting asphalt! Yes, you read that right — asphalt melting!
A hotel in the Pachi area was evacuated, and one of the popular beach bars in Glikadi was completely destroyed by fire. Tourists, including many Serbs, panicked and rushed to Limenas port, where the first ferry to Keramoti left packed with passengers. Due to the fire, the road between Pahia and Limenas was closed, forcing drivers to take alternative routes, causing massive traffic jams and long queues.
Firefighters, police, and volunteers are tirelessly battling the blaze, with the first aircraft arriving at 5:50 AM to assist. However, night-time firefighting is impossible due to safety concerns. Power outages have been announced in some settlements. The mayor of Thassos, Lefteris Kyriakides, urges calm and coordinated action, asking media and residents not to spread panic.
This fire is a disaster for the island’s nature — many trees, olive groves, and beekeeping areas have burned. While residential areas are currently safe, the situation remains serious. If you ever planned a vacation on Thassos, maybe think twice! So, what do you think about these fiery hellish scenes? Is this just the beginning, or will nature strike back even harder? Drop a comment and let’s see who’s ready to fight the fire dragon on Thassos!
