While the world watches in disbelief, politicians and members of Milan’s Jewish community are raising their voices against this horrifying act reminiscent of the darkest days of 1930s fascism.
These posters are not harmless graffiti – they are a direct attack on people, their safety, and dignity. Most of them are found in areas where the Jewish community lives, in schools, and on Salija Majera street, which only heightens fear and tension. Daniele Naum, a municipal councilor from the Azione party, did not hesitate to compare this act to 1930s fascism, clearly stating that the target is the Israeli people, not just the Israeli government.
The situation is alarming – data shows a rise in antisemitism in Milan, and politicians across the political spectrum have condemned the act. The Democratic Party has clearly stated that antisemitism must be rejected, while also criticizing Prime Minister Netanyahu’s actions in the Gaza Strip. On the other hand, Carlo Monguci from the Greens went further, calling on the city to cut all ties with Israel, including the twinning with Tel Aviv, until the “massacre” in Gaza ends.
Davide Romano, director of the Jewish Brigade Museum, warns that attacks on any population – whether Palestinians, Israelis, or Italians – are always a form of racism. He points out that Milan has had too much anti-Israel hatred for some time, culminating in a recent attack on two Italian Jewish children. He calls on city institutions to mobilize and protect their citizens.
