Mileševac Fortress Finally Gets a Makeover – But Is It Enough?
Did you know that the medieval town of Mileševac, proudly perched on a steep cliff above the Mileševka river canyon, is finally getting a chance for a new life? The Prijepolje Tourist Organization has signed a contract worth 8 million dinars for the preparation of project documentation for the interior arrangement of the fortress, including the restoration of the outer gate. But is this just a drop in the ocean of necessary works?
Old Fortress, Old Problems
Mileševac was built in the first half of the 13th century as a protection for the Mileševa monastery from enemies. Although it has withstood the test of time for centuries, storms and nature have eroded it from all sides. The fortress is made of broken trimmed stone and lime mortar, with a citadel on top and several towers serving as watchtowers. However, only partial conservation and restoration works have been done so far, which is not enough to preserve this gem of medieval architecture.
What Does the New Project Bring?
The contract signed with the Republic Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments and the company Geoin from Belgrade foresees detailed project documentation for the interior arrangement of the fortress, as well as the restoration of the outer gate. Funds are secured from the budget of the Prijepolje Tourist Organization, with the support of the local government and co-financing from the fields of tourism and youth. This project is only the first step in preparing new tourist content and preserving the fortress.
Is It Enough?
Although this move is commendable, the question arises whether 8 million dinars will be enough for the complete restoration and revitalization of the fortress. Mileševac has been a symbol of resistance and history for centuries, and now it is on the verge of decay. Will the local community and the state have the strength and will to invest additional funds and effort to make this cultural monument truly shine?
Why Is Mileševac Important?
Besides its historical value, the Mileševac fortress has enormous potential for tourism development in Prijepolje and its surroundings. With the right approach, it can become an unmissable destination for lovers of history, nature, and adventure. But without serious investment and a long-term plan, this gem may remain forgotten and continue to deteriorate.
Conclusion
The restoration of the Mileševac fortress is necessary and urgent, but just preparing project documentation and restoring the outer gate is not enough. A clear vision, greater financial support, and the engagement of all relevant actors are needed to preserve this medieval town for future generations. Will this happen, or will Mileševac remain just a shadow of its former glory?
