High School Admission Just Got Brutal: Minimum Points Soar, Competition Hits the Roof!
Every year, eighth graders in Serbia face one of the most stressful moments of their school life – getting into high school. But this year? Oh boy, it’s a whole new ball game. The minimum points required to get into many gymnasiums and vocational schools in Belgrade and across Serbia have shot up, and not by a little – by several points! The competition is fiercer than ever.
Gymnasiums Raising the Bar
Belgrade’s gymnasiums are seeing a serious jump in their minimum point thresholds. Take the Third Belgrade Gymnasium’s social-linguistic track: last year, you needed at least 91.16 points to get in. This year? A whopping 92.95. The natural sciences and math track at the same school also saw a rise from 94.35 to 95.10 points.
The Fourteenth Belgrade Gymnasium didn’t hold back either, raising the natural sciences and math track minimum by 2.65 points – from 92.55 to 95.20. Even the Zemunska Gymnasium saw its natural sciences track jump from 87.88 to 90.80 points.
Vocational Schools Aren’t Slacking
It’s not just the gymnasiums. Vocational schools in Belgrade, like architectural, economic, and tourism technician tracks, are also seeing noticeable jumps in minimum points needed. Medical schools are mostly steady, with slight rises or falls in some tracks.
For example, the Mihajlo Pupin Electrotechnical School raised its electrician track minimum from 68 to 69.38 points. In Niš, the 9th May Gymnasium saw a big drop in the natural sciences track from 96.29 to 87.25 points, but the general track had a slight increase.
What Does This Mean for Eighth Graders?
For many students, this means the competition is brutal, and every point counts. The rising minimum points show that the quality of candidates is up, but so is the pressure on students.
Parents and students can now compare these numbers with last year’s results on the “My High School” website and plan accordingly. One thing’s clear – getting into high school has become a survival battle.
Is This the End of Toughening?
Hard to say. With more students and higher demands, these thresholds will likely keep climbing. Students? They’ll have to adapt and give it their all.
The Bottom Line
High school admission in Serbia has never been tougher. With rising point thresholds, eighth graders face fiercer competition than ever. Is this a sign of a more demanding education system or just extra pressure on the youth? Drop your thoughts – are you ready for this race, or is it time for a change?
While we wait for the next official data, maybe it’s time to ask – is it fair to put kids under this much pressure at 14? Or is this just another test for future generations?
