Drama Over Minimum Wage in Serbia: Will Salaries Finally Rise or Is It All Just a Show?

Serbia is once again caught up in the whirlwind of minimum wage talks. First Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Siniša Mali announced that the final decision on raising the minimum wage will be made within the next two weeks. But is this really the start of better days for workers, or just another political show?

Negotiations That Drag On

Negotiations over the minimum wage started earlier this year than usual, which might be the only good news in this whole story. The new president of the Independent Trade Unions of Serbia, Zoran Mihajlović, emphasized that the priority is not just raising the minimum wage but increasing all salaries in Serbia. However, the unions still do not have a clear stance on how much of an increase would be acceptable.

Fear of Price Increases

The ministries and unions are closely monitoring to ensure that the planned minimum wage increase does not lead to a rise in consumer basket prices. This is crucial because raising wages without controlling prices can lead to inflation, which would ultimately hurt the workers themselves.

Is This Just a Show?

While politicians and unions play their games, ordinary workers are still waiting for concrete changes. Will the minimum wage really increase twice this year as announced? Or will it all remain promises and drawn-out negotiations?
