Minister Paunović and Šumadija Local Governments: Fighting for a Better Tomorrow or Just Another Story?

Paunović on the Move: Minister of State Administration and Local Self-Government Snežana Paunović continued her tour across Serbia’s administrative districts, this time in Šumadija. She met with the head of the Šumadija Administrative District, Biljana Ilić Stošić, and leaders of cities and municipalities including Kragujevac, Aranđelovac, Topola, Rača, Lapovo, Batočina, and Knić. The hot topic? Development and implementation of projects aimed at improving the lives of ordinary citizens. But is this a genuine fight for change or just another political story?

The minister emphasized that the government’s ambition, under Prime Minister Đura Macuta, is to recognize the needs of the common person and that the state must intervene, primarily by providing financial resources and expert staff. Paunović announced an ambitious amendment to several laws that will ease the strict conditions for hiring young people in public administration, aiming to motivate young professionals to return to their hometowns and help their communities.

The head of the Šumadija Administrative District, Biljana Ilić Stošić, pointed out that the biggest problem is water supply, especially during this dry period, and that meetings like this are crucial for voicing the problems local governments face. During the visit, the minister handed over computer equipment to Kragujevac’s mayor, Nikola Dašić, to support the improvement of local government work, in line with the Serbian government’s decisions.

But while the talk is about development and support for local governments, citizens wonder — how much of these promises will actually reach them? Will young professionals really get a chance, or will the laws remain dead letters on paper? And what about urgent problems like water supply, which already threaten daily life?

After all, road blockades and public anger continue, and emergency services still can’t reach patients. Is this the image of Serbia where the government fights for a better tomorrow, or just another show for the public?
