FEST in a New Light or the Same Old Story?
The Belgrade International Film Festival FEST has appointed a new program director – Miroslav Mogorović, a man with over 30 years of experience in organizing film festivals. Is this the dawn of a new era for FEST or just another change that won’t bring anything new?
Who is Miroslav Mogorović?
Born in Zemun, Mogorović started his career at FEST back in 1989. Since then, he has been the executive producer of the Palić Film Festival, program director, founder of Belgrade Industry Meetings, and producer of over 35 feature films that have won awards at prestigious festivals such as Cannes, Venice, and Berlin. He renovated the oldest cinema in the region and founded several film festivals and centers. So, he’s no stranger to the film world.
What are his plans?
Mogorović promises to reposition FEST not only territorially but also in essence. FEST is returning to the Sava Center, aiming for more current films, higher quality guests, and a positive impact on domestic and regional cinematography. He plans to attract a new generation of film lovers and bring the festival back to its old path of international success.
Is that enough?
FEST used to be one of the most important film festivals in the region but has lost some of its shine in recent years. Can one man, no matter how experienced, bring the festival back to the top? Will the audience flock back to the Sava Center? And what about funding and support from the city of Belgrade and the state? These are questions we will soon get answers to.
