Montenegrin NGOs Demand Clear and Unambiguous EU Support for Reforms

EU or Bust: Montenegrin NGOs Demand No-Nonsense Support for Reforms!

Montenegro stands at a crossroads, and its NGOs are not mincing words – it’s EU support now or… well, you know the drill! Recently, representatives from NGOs like CINS, CZIP, MANS, and others met with Marjan Šarec and made it crystal clear: reforms must be implemented, and fast.

What’s the deal?

At the meeting with Šarec, NGOs took a hard look at the government’s pro-European path. The problem? Domestic institutions are shaky, and reforms planned back in 2016 have yet to be properly executed.

Which reforms are we talking about?

  • Rule of law
  • Public procurement
  • Public finances
  • Fight against corruption and organized crime
  • Electoral reforms
  • Spatial planning
  • Ecology
  • Human rights

All these areas are crucial for European integration, and NGOs warn that without clear and open EU support, Montenegro risks getting stuck in place.

EU and Montenegro: Love or Loathe?

The European Parliament recently adopted a resolution critically assessing Montenegro’s progress. NGOs welcome this resolution as it highlights many issues but simultaneously call on the EU not to turn its back on Montenegro.

Why does this matter?

Montenegro is one of the most advanced EU candidates in the Western Balkans. All 33 negotiation chapters are open, and six are provisionally closed. However, political will and the ability to implement reforms are key. Without them, even the EU’s best intentions won’t help.

What do the NGOs say?

“We need open and unequivocal EU support because only then can we build a strong civic society and an inviolable rule of law,” the NGOs declare.

And what if nothing changes?

Without reforms, Montenegro risks being sidelined in European integration, which would be catastrophic for its future and regional stability.

Bottom line

NGOs are the voice of reason and action in Montenegro. Their message is clear: reforms are not optional; they are an obligation. The EU must show it means business with its enlargement policy, and Montenegro must prove it’s ready for membership.

Think this is just another political story? Think again. This fight is for the future of the entire country. So, what’s your take? For the EU or against? Drop a comment and let the people’s voice roar!
