Montenegro on the Brink of Economic Collapse: Government Manipulates, Citizens Pay the Price

Economy in Free Fall

Montenegro is in deep trouble. Ten sectors that used to be the biggest sources of tax revenue are now shrinking. Agriculture, industry, construction, IT, finance, and real estate are all declining. The tourist season, once a lifeline, is now uncertain. The economy has become almost entirely dependent on refugees from Ukraine and Russia, and as their numbers dwindle, so does economic activity.

Government as Manipulator

The ruling majority in Montenegro’s parliament often acts like a tyranny, barely different from the tyranny of minorities or oligarchies from past undemocratic regimes. Instead of respecting European standards and international conventions, the government passes unconstitutional laws and decrees that violate basic human rights, including the right to peaceful protest.

Justice on Hold

The judiciary has become a servant to the executive branch. The abolition of the two-thirds rule for selecting the Prosecutorial Council has led to political imprisonment and abuse of justice. The case of Saša Čađenović, held for 17 months without fair trial rights, is a glaring example. Instead of pursuing justice, the government focuses on political vendettas and covering up crimes.

Financial Illusion

Prime Minister Spajić boasts about reducing debt and a 2.5% GDP growth, but it’s smoke and mirrors. Growth is driven by increased taxes and VAT, not real production. Imports rise while domestic production falls. The state debt grows under unfavorable terms, and the pension fund is struggling. Unemployment is nearly 10%, with new jobs mostly for party cronies and foreign workers in services.

What Lies Ahead?

If this continues, Montenegro faces illiquidity and bankruptcy. Citizens are deceived by lies and propaganda. Urgent political change and accountability are needed. Until then, we watch the country sink while ordinary people pay the price.

End or Just the Beginning?

Montenegro stands at a crossroads. Will we let it be led to ruin, or will we wake up and demand real change? Got thoughts? Share them — maybe your voice will start an avalanche!

This isn’t just a story about Montenegro. It’s a warning for all of us who believe in justice and a better future.
