Montenegro’s Medical Miracle: Four Successful Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplants This Year!
Did you know that since the start of this year, the Clinical Center of Montenegro (KCCG) has successfully performed four hematopoietic stem cell transplants? Yes, four! And not just any transplants — these were procedures previously only available abroad.
What are hematopoietic stem cells and why does this matter?
Hematopoietic stem cells create blood and the immune system. For patients with malignant hematological diseases like leukemia, this is often the only chance for a cure. Before this year, Montenegrin patients had to travel abroad to get this life-saving treatment. Now, thanks to the expert team at KCCG, this complex procedure is done independently in Montenegro!
How did it all start?
The first transplant was performed on February 17, 2024 — a historic moment for Montenegrin medicine. Since then, three more transplants have been successfully completed, and three patients have already undergone stem cell collection (apheresis) and are awaiting transplantation soon.
Who made this possible?
The hematology team at KCCG, supported by the Clinical Laboratory Diagnostics Center and the Blood Transfusion Institute of Montenegro, has shown that the country is ready for major medical challenges. Specialists like Dr. Enisa Žarić, Dr. Nikola Bakić, Dr. Tanja Antunović, and others have held educational sessions to raise knowledge and ensure top patient care.
The results?
All transplanted patients are in good general condition and have been discharged for home care without complications. This is a huge success for the healthcare system and a big step toward independence in treating serious diseases.
Why should we care?
Imagine how many lives have been saved and will be saved in the future. No more expensive and stressful trips abroad. Our doctors have proven they can handle the toughest medical procedures.
Is this the end? Of course not!
KCCG continues education and improvement, and we can only hope for many more successes like this. Got thoughts or know someone who went through this? Drop a comment — let’s celebrate this medical boom or have a laugh if you think this is just the start of the “Montenegrin medicine” adventure!
One thing’s for sure — Montenegro has shown it can fight for its patients and doesn’t have to rely on others. Bravo, KCCG!
Bonus fact: The first hematopoietic stem cell transplant in Montenegro was only done in February 2024. Before that, patients were sent abroad. Now, that’s history!
If this news made you smile or surprised you, feel free to share your thoughts. Maybe it’s time to believe a little more in our medicine, right?
