Who would have thought that Montenegro’s junior women would pull off a shocker at the EuroBasket opener in La Palma! Everyone expected Serbia, last year’s bronze medalists, to cruise through, but the Montenegrin girls showed they’re not to be messed with. The result? Montenegro beat Serbia, and not just by a little — at one point, they had a double-digit lead!
The game started tense, with Serbia even taking the lead at the 12th minute, but Montenegro bounced back fast. Jelena Bulajić and Milena Vujović were the real stars, scoring 14 and 16 points respectively, with Vujović also snagging 6 steals! Serbia struggled in the third quarter, scoring only three points, riddled with mistakes and misses. Montenegro seized the moment and flipped the game, with Ljuba Andrić scoring four straight points in the 34th minute to give her team a double-digit advantage.
This win is even sweeter knowing Montenegro’s juniors won the B division of the European Championship last year, while Serbia had much bigger ambitions. Is this the start of a new era in Balkan women’s basketball? Will Serbia bounce back or will Montenegro keep shocking everyone? One thing’s for sure — these juniors demand respect now!
