European Commission: Montenegro’s Prosecutor’s Office on the Right Track!
The European Commission recently published a report on the rule of law in Montenegro and, surprise surprise, praised the state prosecutor’s office! They especially highlighted progress in fighting organized crime and corruption. Yes, you read that right – even high-ranking officials are being prosecuted!
But is it all sunshine and rainbows?
While the EC praises the results of investigations and indictments, public skepticism and criticism from some officials questioning trust in the prosecutor’s work still linger. The Prosecutor’s Office reminds everyone that evaluations should be based on objective indicators, not sweeping claims.
Numbers that make you think
According to an OSCE survey from February 2023, public trust in the prosecutor’s office is steadily growing. A solid 64.1% trust the Supreme State Prosecutor’s Office, and 64.8% trust the Special State Prosecutor’s Office. Half of the citizens believe the prosecutor’s office works efficiently, 53% say it fights corruption successfully, and 61% think it operates independently and impartially.
Is this the end of criticism?
Of course not! Despite encouraging stats, the public still demands concrete verdicts and justice. The EC report notes an increase in investigations and indictments in high-level corruption cases, but verdicts are still missing.
What’s next?
The Supreme State Prosecutor’s Office remains committed to professional and lawful work, preserving institutional independence. They also support all judicial reforms aimed at further improving the rule of law in Montenegro.
The bottom line
So, praise on one side and doubts on the other. Is the prosecutor’s office truly on the right path, or is this all just a show for the public? You decide! And hey, if you’ve got a good joke about justice and corruption, drop it in the comments – maybe we all need a laugh while waiting for justice.
