Have you ever thought that school should be a safe place for kids? Well, in Danilovgrad, it’s anything but! A mother of a boy who was a victim of violence in February at “Vuko Jovović” elementary school has taken the most drastic step — a hunger strike! Maja Ivanović, desperate and without support from institutions, started her protest in front of the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of Montenegro. Why? Because, she says, the school principal Mirjana Keković is ignoring the violence against her son and taking no action!
The boy, according to his mother, has been under severe stress since February 19, suffering health consequences directly linked to the violence he endured. Maja tried everything to get help — contacting authorities, media — but hit a wall of silence and irresponsibility. Her main demand is the dismissal of principal Keković, which was already requested from the Ministry but with no results.
The Ministry stated they forwarded the case to the school inspectorate and the Institute for Education, who gave recommendations and took measures within their powers. But they say they cannot act without findings from inspection bodies. So the system spins in circles, while the child and his family remain without justice.
The mother called on NGOs, media, and foreign embassies to help her get justice. Her message is clear: until this case is resolved, she will not stop her hunger strike.
This is not just a story about one child and one school. It’s a wake-up call for the entire education system of Montenegro! How many more kids have to suffer before someone finally takes responsibility? Got thoughts on this? Maybe you’ve seen something similar?
