Mysterious Series of Murders in Svrljiški Region: Is the Serial Killer Still at Large?
In the heart of Serbia, in the villages of the Svrljiški region, three brutal murders have remained a mystery for years. Momčilo Simonović (59), Vukadin Božinović (93), and Borislav Kostić (75) were savagely killed in their homes, with the motive believed to be greed – robbery of money and valuables they kept at home.
Three murders, one motive, one end?
The murders occurred in the villages of Galibabinac, Mardželat, and Lalinac, known as the Svrljiški triangle, over a span of two years. All three victims were elderly, mostly pensioners, who had savings in their homes. Locals still live in fear as the perpetrators have not been found, and there is suspicion that the same person is responsible for all three crimes.
Horrifying scenes and injustice
The first murder happened in November when Momčilo Simonović was brutally beaten and tied to a chair; the torture lasted for hours until he revealed where he hid the money. His sister, Toplica Kostić, still cannot come to terms with the fact that the killer walks free. Two years later, Vukadin Božinović (93) was killed with an axe while lying in bed, and then in December of the same year, Borislav Kostić (75) was found stabbed in the neck, initially thought to be suicide, but autopsy revealed it was murder.
Accusations and court trials without justice
In the case of Momčilo Simonović, his friend Lidija Stejković was arrested for failing to report a crime, as traces of the victim’s blood were found on her pants. However, during the trial, it was not proven that she directly participated in the murder. She has already served a two-year prison sentence for failing to report the crime.
Fear and caution in the community
Residents of the Svrljiški region still live in fear and caution. Everyone takes care of their property and savings because they do not know who the monster is that took the lives of their neighbors. There is a fear that the serial killer is still free and may strike again.
Will justice ever be served?
Although years pass, locals hope that investigators will finally solve these gruesome crimes and that justice will be served. Until then, fear and uncertainty remain part of everyday life in the villages of the Svrljiški region.
