July 10th in Belgrade was not just another day on the calendar. It was the day Serbia officially celebrated National Science Day, marking the birthday of Nikola Tesla, the man who changed the world with his discoveries. Academician Bela Balint didn’t hold back, calling science the engine of progress and the key to solving modern social challenges. “Tesla was one of the most deserving people who thought ahead,” Balint said, while the state promised investments in young talents, scientific infrastructure, and system digitalization. But is this real commitment or just empty words?
The ceremony was attended by many distinguished guests, including State Secretary Marija Gnjatović, who emphasized that the Ministry of Science will support every initiative that leads to science being at the center of Serbia’s social and economic development.
Yet, while Tesla and science are celebrated, the question remains: how ready is Serbia to truly support scientists and researchers? Are the investments enough, or is this just another day for Instagram posts?
If you love science, or just love pretending you do, take a look at this event and think — is Serbia really on the path to scientific progress, or does it just like to brag about famous names from the past? And hey, if you have an opinion, don’t be shy to share it — science loves debates, and we love a good comment!
