Niš Builds Dams on Nišava: Flood Protection or Urban Circus?

The city of Niš is gearing up to build dams on the Nišava River right in the heart of the city. Mayor Dragoslav Pavlović announced that these dams will serve as flood protection, but that’s not all—they’re also aimed at enhancing the urban landscape and boosting Niš’s tourism potential. Sounds like a dream, right? But will it actually happen or just end up as another forgotten plan?

In a meeting with the director of JP Srbijavode, Goran Puzović, key projects in water management and infrastructure were discussed. The plan is to raise the river level in the city center, which will create space for new amenities like sports facilities, bike paths, and promenades. All very fancy, but can they pull it off?

Besides the dams, there’s a plan to reconstruct two bridges in Vrežina and Medoševac, crucial for safe and functional traffic flow. The “Selova” project aims to establish a stable water supply not only for Niš but also for the wider basin area of Toplica, Nišava, and South Morava rivers. This is vital for southern Serbia, especially with climate change and increasing pressure on water resources.

JP Srbijavode is kicking off a new investment cycle and hopes to revive a project that fell apart 20 years ago. The goal? Reliable water supply, better flood safety, and tourism development.

But while these grand plans are on the table, Niš residents still face daily issues—from trash scattered in nature to water supply problems in nearby municipalities. Will this project be the light at the end of the tunnel or just another empty promise?
