North Macedonia and Greece on Fire: Is Summer 2024 the Worst Yet?

Hell on the Balkans: Fires Rage in North Macedonia and Greece!

Welcome to summer 2024, where fires don’t die down, they spread! In just three days, North Macedonia recorded a staggering 43 wildfires on open land. Yes, 43! Stojanče Angelov, head of the Rescue Directorate, warns us that a tough summer is ahead.

“I urge all citizens, especially those with weekend homes and old houses, to take care of their yards. Mowing the grass isn’t just gardening, it’s a matter of life and death!” Angelov says.

But it’s not just North Macedonia in trouble. Neighboring Greece is even worse off. Two men, aged 45 and 48, have been charged with setting forest fires near Halkidiki and Thessaloniki. Was it carelessness or deliberate arson? Either way, farming with combines and tractors has become a synonym for fiery disasters.

The worst part? Fires aren’t just fueled by nature, but by human irresponsibility. Angelov is clear: “The focus should be on prevention, not firefighting!” But how do you stop people from lighting fires outdoors?

This isn’t just one country’s problem, it’s a regional crisis. While the flames spread, we just watch. Will we finally act or wait to be consumed by the blaze?

Got thoughts on this fiery disaster? Drop a comment. Maybe your idea will save next summer from hell!
