New Traffic Madness at Republic Square: Who’s to Blame for the Gridlock?

Welcome to yet another round of traffic hell at Republic Square in Belgrade! From 2 PM on July 14th until July 16th, the wider area of the square will be closed due to road surface repairs carried out by the public company “Beogradput.” Sound familiar? Of course, because this is just another chapter in the endless saga of traffic regime changes that make us wonder if anyone ever thought about us, the ordinary folks trying to get to work, school, or just grab a coffee. Traffic will be open only in the direction of Terazije – Kolarčeva – Makedonska, and only in one lane. Pedestrians? They will be allowed to cross the road only at existing pedestrian crossings, turning a simple walk into a real adventure.

But wait, there’s more! Nine public transport lines will change their routes, meaning your favorite bus or tram might be late or take you to unknown destinations. The Traffic Secretariat issued a statement, but who really listens? The repairs are necessary, they say, but can’t this be organized better? Is it possible that in the 21st century, in the capital city, we can’t carry out repairs without total chaos?

This isn’t just a Belgrade problem; it’s a problem for any city that doesn’t plan ahead and doesn’t respect its citizens. While we suffer through closed streets and detours, somewhere in an office, someone is probably sipping coffee and plotting the next way to annoy us. If you’re already stuck in traffic or lost because of new routes, know you’re not alone. And hey, feel free to share your frustrations in the comments — maybe together we’ll find a way out of this traffic maze or at least get a good laugh while waiting for things to go back to normal.
