How One Donor Saves Six Lives: Transplants in Serbia on the Edge of a Miracle

Imagine this – at the hardest moment when a family loses their loved one, they say “yes” and save six lives! Yes, you read that right, six lives! At the Emergency Center of the University Clinical Center of Serbia (UKCS), a heart, liver, kidney, and cornea transplant was recently performed thanks to one donor who changed destinies. Milan Krajinović from Čačak, who waited six years for a liver transplant, now feels like a new man, full of energy and life. Dr. Tijana Todorčević, an anesthesiologist on the team, highlights that the postoperative course went perfectly and all patients are doing well. But let’s be real – how many donors do we have in Serbia? Too few! In the last ten years, about 70 transplants have been done, but the number of donors remains low, and around 80 people are currently waiting just for a liver. Every day without donors is a lost day for lives. The teams are ready, coordinators are waiting for that famous “yes” from the donor’s family. But where are these heroes? Where is the courage to say “yes” in the hardest moment and save someone’s life? Milan is now proof that transplantation is not just a medical procedure but a real miracle that changes lives. And no, it’s not just for the elderly or sick – Milan was in his thirties! Any of us could be in that situation. So next time you hear about organ donation, remember Milan and the six lives saved by one “yes.” What about you? Do you have the strength? Or will you keep looking away? Share your thoughts, maybe your story will spark someone’s change of heart.
