The sun is roasting Serbia like never before, and farmers are losing their minds! Temperatures hit a scorching 39 degrees Celsius in the shade, and drought has taken over most of the country. Corn, soy, sugar beet, and sunflower — which cover about 80% of our crop fields — are suffering like never before. Without irrigation systems, many vegetable crops are on the brink of disaster. The Serbian Hydrometeorological Institute warns of extreme drought and a severe moisture deficit in the soil that could destroy crops. Wheat, barley, and rapeseed planted last autumn have already yielded, but corn and soy are in big trouble. Vegetable growers with irrigation systems, like tomato and pepper producers, have little to worry about, but those without irrigation face an uncertain future. Water levels in the Danube, Sava, and Tisa rivers are below low navigable levels, making things worse. Meteorologists predict the dry spell and high temperatures will continue, pushing us toward a Mediterranean climate. Think this is just another heatwave? Think again — this is a wake-up call for all of us! Maybe it’s time to finally take irrigation and food security seriously. What do you think? Will we let our fields turn into deserts? Drop a comment and let’s see who’s ready to fight for our land!
