Payment Interoperability: A Strategic Imperative in a World of Digital Inequalities

In a world where digital inequalities and geopolitical tensions are mushrooming like crazy, payment interoperability isn’t just some boring economic jargon – it’s a matter of life and death for Montenegro’s financial future and the region! Central Bank Governor Irena Radović made it crystal clear at the annual Bank for International Settlements (BIS) meeting in Basel: payment interoperability is a strategic imperative. Yes, you read that right – as the world fragments and digital divides deepen, Montenegro is fighting to build an inclusive, resilient, and modern financial infrastructure that enables faster, safer, and cheaper transactions.

Radović highlighted the introduction of the national instant payment platform TIPS-Klon, developed in cooperation with the Bank of Italy and the European Central Bank, as a key project that will integrate Montenegro into the EU’s financial ecosystem. This isn’t just a tech upgrade – it’s a golden opportunity for citizens and businesses to access competitive and affordable financial services, vital for economic growth and resilience, especially for smaller, open economies like ours.

At the Basel roundtable, discussions focused on cross-border instant payments and boosting international cooperation to enhance transaction efficiency and security. In a world shadowed by trade tensions and uncertainty, careful calibration of central bank policies and modernization of financial systems aren’t luxuries – they’re necessities.

The Bank for International Settlements, founded way back in 1930, is the oldest international financial institution, bringing together central bank governors worldwide. Montenegro actively participates in BIS activities, contributing to regional and European integration and institutional modernization.

Think this is just another dull banking story? Think again! In the age of digital wars, economic sanctions, and geopolitical upheavals, the ability to send and receive money quickly and securely across borders can be the difference between prosperity and stagnation. And Montenegro? We stand on the brink of huge change – and huge challenges. Will we keep pace with the world or get stuck in the digital dark ages?

While global giants battle for dominance in digital finance, we here in Montenegro must ask: is our infrastructure ready for the future? Will our citizens benefit from these changes or be left on the sidelines again?
